    Description:

In recent years, branch managers of Philippines banks have been directed by their respective managements to focus intently on the generation of sales -- fresh deposits, investment accounts, loans, and other allied products and services. The end-objective is to get hold of a bigger and better “share of wallet” of the banking public, which in return, ultimately contributes to the Bank’s overall profitability.

Bank management believes that to achieve the mandated goal, the operational responsibilities of the typical branch manager should be de-emphasized, thereby allowing the branch manager to concentrate more fully on his sales activity. This move to drum up sales at the expense of operational control has resulted in the reorganization of the typical branch’s manpower and operational structures.

Operations under a restructured branch set-up normally cover cash operations, a portion of the clearing operation, proving of debits and credit of the daily transactions, and some selected

General Ledgers (GL) accounts. Unfortunately, the very strength of this set-up in terms of its sales focus is sometimes also its weakness in terms of operations and control. This inherent limitation of a restructured branch set-up has prevented branch managers from seeing and understanding the entirety of a full-service branch operation. Another reason that may prevent a typical branch manager from seeing and understanding the interrelationships between one aspect of operations to another is the scarcity of training materials. These materials should contain a “best practices” list - an enumeration of policies, procedures and applied and practical practices that have been considered effective in several successful local banks. There is also a perceived absence of a resource person/s who can actually share and explain how these practices help bankers to become an effective bank branch manager in the Philippine setting.

This handbook is a review of basic concepts and guidelines for branch managers to use in their day-to-day management activities. The author hopes that by constantly reviewing this handbook, the branch manager can plug the loopholes in his branch and, in so doing, have more time, energy and confidence to pursue his sales targets.
