Grace Royales

Biography

As a branch manager who struggled through numerous "sink-or-swim" branch assignments, the author is quite familiar with the skills and tools needed to survive under the adverse environment that marks Philippine branch banking today. From her initial exposure to banking as a branch teller up to the time that she was designated as branch manager handling two big branches simultaneously, her career has had more than its fair share of financial targets, audit findings, and even the occasional hard-headed employee deadwood. In spite of these obstacles - or perhaps because of them - Grace managed to garner several awards for both branch marketing and operational achievements during the years that she handled her branch assignments. Grace credits her solid background in accounting and comptrollership as the bases for her fighting edge when it comes to bank branch management. In effect, she has seen and exercised both aspects of the branch manager's persona. As a branch accountant, she implemented control and compliance measures in all the branches that she handled. On the other hand, as teller, branch cashier and eventually branch manager, the author was tasked with new client acquisition and increase in "share of wallet" of existing clients. Her experience as a branch manager can best be summed up in one phrase -trying her best to juggle these two seemingly opposing and contradictory functions. The resulting experience eventually led her to prepare a "Survival Handbook". The author feels that the present-day branch manager needs to focus on several aspects of marketing and operations, just to survive. Unless these subject matters are constantly and consistently upheld, the author feels that today's branch manager will simply be consumed by fraud or distracted by regulatory issues.
